A CIRCUS

A show
Under the lights,
Introduced by a great yelling voice.
Somebody invites us to look
At what our eyes won’t believe in.
The struggle with the snakes.
The triple somersault in the air.
The rabbit in the top hat.
The handbag contorsionist.
The acrobat elephants…
And, amid the stink of the beasts,
Human or inhuman as they are,
Fascinated we watch on.
With fauces wide open,
Ready to growl with pleasure.
And impatient we wait for
The next astonishing number
To distract us from our tedious life.
So decent.
So normal.
