How to participate and be published?

MARCH–DECEMBER 2018

this year 2018. as #logosedizioni. and as ILLUSTRATI. I dedicate it to reading. TO BOOKS!
#logosedizioni has just launched the series “la piccola biblioteca di Ciopi” (Ciopi’s Little Library). which we are going to present at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. at our usual stand. and we have also renewed the invitation to bookshops to participate in the #LIBRERIEinFIORE project. a project we organise and manage for free only for the love of books. and in the attempt to stop the slow progressive death of bookstores. and therefore of books and readers. as for ILLUSTRATI, this year the theme of each issue is going to be a book. that’s something we already did. true. An Angel at My Table. My Family and Other Animals. and many others... but this year our criteria for the selections will be very strict. only illustrations which are really related to the book can participate. not just to the title. so you will need to read the book, necessarily. word by word. even four times, if necessary. as Roger Olmos did to create his wonderful version of COSIMO. someone could find this too strict. maybe. I don’t think so. but if we want to consider the magazine as a showcase. and endow it with a practical value. and therefore show what you’re made of. dear illustrators. also to other publishers. or to readers who have read the books proposed as themes and will enjoy your interpretation of their favourite characters or novels. then practicing starting from a text could be the beginning of a brilliant career. and also a real, concrete challenge. let’s take ourselves seriously.
so I’m asking you. for each theme. to send a proposal for the cover. illustrations for the inner pages are welcome too. for this hypothetical job.
writers are invited too. to write short stories. or poems. get inspired by the theme. or tell us your experience. or of a friend of yours.

March 2018:#BUDO – MEMOIRS OF AN IMAGINARY FRIEND by Matthew Dicks, Little, Brown Book Group
this issue will be available at the #logosedizioni stand A16 PAD 26 at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, March 26–29, 2018
this selection will be open from February 4 to March 4 2018, at 11.59 pm

“Here is what I know:
My name is Budo.
I have been alive for five years.
Five years is very long for someone like me to be alive.
Max gave me my name.
Max is the only human person who can see me.
Max's parents call me an imaginary friend.
I am not imaginary.
I’m also lucky that Max has a great imagination. I once knew an imaginary friend named Chomp who was just a spot on the wall. Just a fuzzy, black blob without any real shape at all. Chomp could talk and sort of slide up and down the wall, but he was two-dimensional like a piece of paper, so he could never pry himself off. He didn’t have arms and legs like me. He didn’t even have a face.
Imaginary friends get their appearance from their human friend’s imagination. Max is a very creative boy, and so I have two arms, two legs, and a face. I’m not missing a single body part and that makes me a rarity in the world of imaginary friends. Most imaginary friends are missing something or other and some don’t even look human at all. Like Chomp.
Too much imagination can be bad, though. I once met an imaginary friend named Pterodactyl…”

May 2018: #INCEST – THE INCEST DIARY, anonymous, Farrar, Straus and Girou
this issue will be available at the #logosedizioni stand at the Turin International Book Fair, May 10–14, 2018
this selection will be open from March 5 to April 5, 2018

July 2018 – PAWANA, J.M. Le Clézio, AGNIonline
“We had no spirit any longer, I think, we no longer knew the beauty of the world. We were made drunk by the odor of blood, by the noise of life going out with the sprays. Now I remember the looks of the men. How could I not have seen it? It was a voluntary and pitiless look. Certain injured whales would pull the launch down to the depths, and one had to cut through the line with an axe to avoid being run aground on the sandbars. There these whales died, and their corpses rotted like sea wrecks. I remember the look of the child who was with us. He kept burning me with a single question that had no answer. I know now what this question was. How, he asked me, can one kill what one loves?"
Selection from April 6th to May 6th, 2018

September 2018 – THE BARON IN THE TREES, Italo Calvino, Mariner Books
“‘Cosimo,’ I began, ‘you’re over sixty-five – how can you continue to stay up there? What you wanted to say you’ve said, we’ve understood, you had great strength of mind, you did it, now you can come down. Even those who’ve spent their whole life at sea, at a certain age they disembark.’ Of course not. He said no with his hand. He hardly spoke anymore. He got up every so often, wrapped in a blanket up to his head, and sat on a branch to enjoy a little sun.”
Selection from May 6th to July 6th, 2018

October 2018 – THE ANIMAL-LOVER’S BOOK OF BEASTLY MURDER, Patricia Highsmith, WW Norton & Co
“Men scamper round me as the monkeys did, kicking me, shouting to one another. Again I see the huge cats leaping in the forest, leaping on me now. Then through the blur of the men’s figures I see Steve very clearly, but Steve as he was when he was young–smiling, talking to me, with his pipe in his teeth. Steve moves slowly and gracefully. So I know I am dying, because I know Steve is dead. He is more real than the others. There is a forest around him. Steve is my friend, as always. There are no cats, only Steve, my friend.”
Selection from July 7th to September 1st, 2018

November 2018 –THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES, Jean Giono, Vintage Publishing
“To see a human being reveal really exceptional qualities one must be able to observe his activities over many years. If these activities are completely unselfish; if the idea motivating them is unique in its magnanimity; if it is quite certain they have never looked for any reward; and if in addition they have left visible traces on the world – then one may say, without fear of error, that one is in the presence of an unforgettable character.”
This issue will be distributed at the #logosedizioni stand at Lucca Comics and Games from October 31st to November 4th 2018.
Selection from September 2nd to October 1st, 2018

December 2018 – IF THIS IS A MAN, Primo Levi, Little, Brown Book Group
“For living men, the units of time always have a value, which increases in ratio to the strength of the internal resources of the person living through them; but for us, hours, days, months spilled out sluggishly from the future into the past, always too slowly, a valueless and superfluous material, of which we sought to rid ourselves as soon as possible. With the end of the season when the days chased each other, vivacious, precious and irrecoverable, the future stood in front of us, grey and inarticulate, like an invincible barrier. For us, history had stopped.”
Selection from October 1st to November 1st, 2018
